Reporting to the Director, Purchasing and based in our Vancouver location, the Buyer will support the purchasing initiatives within our Supply Chain team and ensure on time and on cost prototype builds at a high-quality standard. The successful candidate will interface mainly with engineering and product development groups, manufacturing engineering, quality and operations to provide purchasing expertise and support best practices.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for sourcing capable prototype suppliers
  • Responsible for prototype RFQ’s, prototype procurement and to ensure timely supplier selection from approved supplier list
  • Negotiate prototype tooling, parts, and sample procurement and delivery with suppliers to meet project deliverable timing
  • Coordinate with engineering and manufacturing to ensure all prototype testing parts and logistics meet quality and timing requirements
  • Initiate and support activities to determine make vs buy decisions
  • Support the strategic purchasing team in global sourcing and supplier benchmarking
  • Support implementation of a global prototyping commodity strategy
  • Support the supply chain organization with ongoing cost reduction activities
  • Create supplier scorecards to drive for continuous improvement and creation of best practice-based processes and procedures
  • Implement, follow and enforce relevant purchasing procedures, emphasizing low cost
  • Ensure that internal operations and supplier activities are carried out in an ethical, responsible manner
  • Program metrics generation, including timing, delivery status, cost status
  • Ensure that purchasing policies are followed and maintain all purchasing documentation
  • Arrange Supplier meetings and follow up on actions and report preparation
  • Responsible for maintaining the integrity of the procurement system
  • Create and maintain bill of material and parts/commodities numbers in supply chain management or other enterprise wide systems
  • Interact closely with suppliers and Quality to resolve quality issues
  • Knowledge of Quality Control and problem-solving techniques (Process FMEA / Control Plans / 8D problem solving / 5 Why)

  • Promote Westport’s H&S culture following all Environmental, and H&S procedures and understanding your obligations and responsibilities
  • Report unsafe conditions, behaviors and all accidents
  • Co-operate with JHSC (Joint Health & Safety Committee) and Safety representative

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related field
  • 2+ years of experience as a Sourcing/ Technical Buyer in Automotive or Industrial Environment
  • Experience with building Supplier Relationships, working with multiple suppliers in the development of sourcing strategies
  • Working knowledge of Material Requirements Planning (MRP)
  • Experience in Project and Risk Management; demonstrated experience in developing concurrent detailed project plans and execute against these plans
  • Sourcing and procurement acumen
  • Domestic and global expertise of assigned commodities
  • Ability to read/understand engineering drawings and GD&T
  • Controlling and cost analysis knowledge
  • Relevant ERP knowledge (Oracle JDE preferred)
  • Excellent proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Target oriented team player with strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Must be able to work independently and demonstrate strong personal initiative
  • Certification from ISM or SCMA, PMP highly desirable
  • Ability to travel globally
